FOLK ART FISH DECOYS IN THE "CRAFTSMAN" TRADITION by C.B Lewis
Bruce has been creating folk art for close to 35 years now. His fish decoys are a semblance of influences gathered over a life time. These influences came by handling and studying fish produced from the late 1800’s thru the 1930’s. The Craftsman of this period produced some of the finest and most artistically desirable examples ever made. Fish decoys rarely have hooks like lures because they were used differently. A large hole is cut in the ice and a shanty or (darkhouse) was placed over the ice hole. From this vantage point the spear fisherman would lure his prey into spearing range by swimming or jigging his fish decoy through the opening in the ice. These often wild and whimsical fish forms were used mainly throughout the cold Mid-Western states, the "Great Lakes Region" and South to the Lake Chautauqua Region of Western NY. Bruce lives in Haycock Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
